How to measure an event carbon footprint: an eight-step workflow

1. Decide the purpose and reporting unit

Start before suppliers are appointed. Decide whether the calculation is for internal learning, a client report, a corporate greenhouse-gas inventory, or an externally reviewed claim. Set two reporting units:

  1. Total event footprint, in kilograms or tonnes of CO2e.

  2. Event intensity, such as CO2e per physical attendee per event day.

3. Build a forecast baseline

7. Check the result

What is a carbon neutral event?

In common use, it is an event whose defined greenhouse-gas footprint has been measured, reduced, and then balanced for the reporting period through an equivalent treatment of residual emissions. It does not mean the event produced no emissions.

The phrase is meaningful only when the organiser publishes the boundary, gross footprint, reductions, residual amount, treatment, and review status. The better sequence is: measure, avoid, reduce, report, review, then treat residual balancing as the last step.
